How booking a manatee tour works

1 · Decide whether you are getting in

A swim tour puts you in the water in a wetsuit; a viewing cruise keeps you dry. On one operator's own price list a non-swimmer riding along costs $65 against $80 for an adult swimmer, so a split group may do better on a cruise.

2 · Check the group size and what is included

Look for the wetsuit, mask and snorkel, an in-water guide and whether photos cost extra. One operator's group pontoon carries up to 12; private boats start at $750 for the whole group.

3 · Book for the season, not the spring

From November 15 to March 31 the seven sanctuaries close and the refuge can shut more water when manatees crowd in. No captain can promise Three Sisters Springs on a given day; the best tours find manatees wherever the water is open.
